IOGRAPHY HILDA VLEUGELS

At school usually a "very well" for essays, always in for pranks, a father who in his life entertained over 100.000 kids as a puppet player and ventriloquist. That are the foundations of Hilda's humorous pen. Hence it took we while before she started writing comedies.

When she had graduated in Secretariat and European Languages (Dutch, English, French, German, Spanish) she worked about five years as a direction secretary in various firms. In the latest she met her husband. They married and started a papershop.

After twenty years of hard work in that shop Hilda decided to take it more easy. They sold the shop. And all of he sudden she had time for a hobby. She joined a theatre group. One day an actresse sighed: "Why do men always have the best parts in a comedy?" That was an eyeopener. And Hilda started to write comedies with outstanding funny roles for women.

Her first play (in Dutch: De geest van Toetekome) was an instant succes. In 1993-1994 it got the Frans Cools Theatre Award.
More awards followed: 1999: Silver Medal at the FVST Festival.
"Coffee Grounds and Crystal Gazing" was among the 10 nomitated at the George Kernodle New Play Competition 1999 in Arkansas (USA).

Meanwhile there have been about 400 productions of Hilda's comedies. There were also productions abroad: in Holland and Poland. Her plays have been read and studied in several American colleges.

In 2010 Hilda put playwriting on hold for a little while, for another humoristic matter. During two seasons she was an actress in "The Benidorm Bastards", a television program that in 2011 won the Emmy Award for best humoristic television program.

Now "The Benidorm Bastards" have come to an end, Hilda is writing again. She wrote 5 more Flemish plays. And the next comedy is in the pipeline.
